Building on the work of the 2021 Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Sustainable management project, Rock Environment and Energy Institute (REEI) supported IGES Center Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET) in November to December 2021 to develop the version III of the IGES-GHG calculator entitled “Calculation Tool for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions from Municipal Solid Waste Management in a Life Cycle Perspective”, a tool that enables to estimate GHG emissions from waste sector in China in the life cycle perspective. REEI provided support in the Chinese translation of the tool and User Manual, and in the modification of parameters suitable for MSW management in China.
In 2011, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) developed a prototype to facilitate local governments’ science-based decision-making for climate mitigation as well as quantitative evaluation of their progress.
In the latest version, REEI and IGES had an in-depth exchange on some key data points that are currently difficult to obtain, such as recycling rates of different waste volumes, and how the lack of data can be addressed by adopting the global average as the default value. After joint efforts and close communication, IGES team finally released the version III (Chinese context) in early January 2022.
The latest version incorporates all existing waste management options in China. The recycling sheet has been modified significantly to estimate the GHG mitigation potential from material recovery and circularity, and the waste incineration sheet has been improved to calculate the potential GHG avoidance through energy recovery options in China. CCET has also developed a User Manual for users. We expect that the tool may help Chinese environmental groups working on MSW management to assess the carbon emission reductions from their projects of existing and future, thus leading more organizations in this field to integrate their project activities with climate change mitigation.
