South Africa and Vietnam: Beginning of the Upcoming Global Coal Phase-out Era?

On November 11, 2021, an article written by Zhao Ang, co-director of REEI, titled "South Africa and Vietnam: Beginning of the Upcoming Global Coal Phase-out Era?" was published by Lianhe Zaobao. In this article, Ang Zhao first reviewed the progress of first-week at the COP26, and concluded that Vietnam and South Africa were the key factors to accelerate coal phase-out. Seeing South Africa receive significant financial support from the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States prompted Vietnam, who is in short supply of energy, to sign the Coal Phase-out Pledge.
