“By selecting environment-compatible materials in the procurement process, hospitals can force suppliers to improve the production process and product design process, and promote the green and sustainable development of enterprises.”
— Stressed on the "Sustainable Procurement in the Healthcare Sector 2019"
forum by Ding Ling,
Director of green Procurement Office,
China Environmental United Certification Center (CEC)
A study of carbon emissions from OECD countries, China and India between 2000 and 2014 found that the health sector contributed an average of 5% of the country's total carbon emissions. Carbon emissions from China's healthcare sector reached 600 million tons in 2014, accounting for 6.6% of the country's total carbon emissions. Whether in China or at abroad, how to carry on the sustainable development of the health sector is an urgent problem. In addition, the health sector plays an absolute leading role in promoting the sustainable development of the supply chain. While actively participating in sustainable development, the health sector also has the possibility to urge more departments to accelerate the pace of sustainable development. Therefore, the sustainable development of the health sector should not be underestimated.
On June 16, 2019, REEI held the "Sustainable Procurement in the Healthcare Sector 2019" forum. The forum focused on the main topics of energy consumption, emission reduction, chemical replacement, waste management and other topics in the health sector. Network trainee reporter Shuning Chen reported this discussion. In this report, the author summarized the essence of the forum, and also presented an indisputable fact: the health sector needs to accelerate its pace of sustainable development.
