Faced with challenges such as climate change, energy security and air pollution, China has become a major investor in global renewable energy since 2007. However, considering the status quo that China’s energy structure is heavily dependent on coal, it is still a long way to go for China to achieve low-carbon energy system.

Rock Environment and Energy Institute has conducted the analysis of Chinese energy transformation issues. The six articles included in this report are the outcomes of  this project, and the English version is an abstract format of the Chinese full text. We expect that this series of articles can stimulate public policy debate of energy transformation and promote rational communication amongst policy-makers, researchers, advocates and action groups. This would be a continuous and lengthy process, but we believe that open-minded and long-term targeted policy discussion will play an active role in promoting a rational, effective and just energy transformation. Topics covered in this report are all directly related to energy transformation, including the character of shale gas in future 10-15 years, uncertainties in renewable energy employment, low carbon strategy for transport electrification development, the reasonability of price formation mechanism for power transmission and distribution, the overestimation of power consumption prediction, and unsustained tariff surcharge for renewable energy generation. All these aspects have demonstrated that it will be a huge systematic project for China to achieve a sustainable energy transformation in the next 30-40 years. In this process, we need to push equitable participation of all stakeholders through an inclusive and dynamic solution.
